Sylva Locke

I paint semi abstract expressionism figures and faces with Acrylic on canvas. I am an automatic painter, when I’m working, I try to remove myself from the aesthetic process as much as possible to begin with. I’m thinking about life and just making markers and just drawing in ”things” with my brush. I’m essentially “doodling” with paint. Eventually figures and faces and shapes reveal themselves to me and I choose to enhance and cover others until the composition, and the story feels like it is complete. When completed I often identify a story with my own biography. It’s like the painting knows what it’s creating before I do! I work mainly with acrylic on canvas so I can produce many layers for each painting.
